In 2017, I published my manual on Copperplate Script. I didn’t want to simply regurgitate what was already done, I wanted to make a full departure from the past and find a simplified approach to the teaching of Copperplate Script.

The publication allowed me to present my ‘4Fold Symmetry’ where the four facets of ‘Angular Confinement’, ‘Elliptical Confinement’, ‘Continuous Movement’, and ‘Variable Velocity’ come together to help in a deeper understanding of how to write Copperplate Script.

In it I also talk extensively how ‘Inhaling on the upstroke and exhaling on the downstroke’ as intrinsically linked to the writing of the letters and this in turn generates a meditative field, connecting our writing with a peaceful practice.

The manual touches on the ‘Tools & Materials’ needed for the practice as well as Posture, Placement of the Page, and Position of the Hand. Next follows a series of exercises to help build confidence with tools whilst understanding the 4Fold Symmetry.

The volume of historical research put into the manual necessitated taking the original ‘English Writing Masters’ terminology and adding to it to cover the Majuscules and Minuscules and their letter parts. I also found it important to show the Roman Capital letter and how a working knowledge of caps dramatically influence the shape and character of the Copperplate Script letters.

The manual also covers numbers, punctuation, diacritical marks and an extensive word list for you to practice. Double letter combinations, flourishing and the writing of text are all touched on as well as a brief section on Brush Copperplate. 23 exemplars from various calligraphers showing how different Copperplate Script is when writing out a pangram finishes off the book.
